Sports superstars on plant-based diets

Plant-based diets are often frowned upon, especially by people who believe that meat is the best source of protein. This is why plant-based diets aren’t at all popular in the weightlifting and bodybuilding scenes. However, John DenBoer suggests that plant-based diets are actually quite beneficial, even for extremely active individuals and mentions that all the nutrients a person consumes from the diet are enough to enhance athletic performance.

On that note, here are four sports superstars who swear by their plant-based diets.

Ryan Reed: Accomplished NASCAR racer Ryan Reed has lived with Type 1 Diabetes for quite some time now. He has been active in the promotion of awareness of health and fitness. Reed’s plant-based diet helps him through his extremely busy and demanding lifestyle – which wouldn’t be possible if the said diet was flawed, notes John DenBoer.

Michaela Copenhaver: The sport of rowing can be as demanding on the body as any other sport. Michaela Copenhaver has been nothing short of a superstar for the sport, and a legend among U.S. Rowing National Team circles. She became a vegan in 2012, and has mentioned that she hasn’t been sick or gone past her ideal weight since. In fact, she notes that she’s getting stronger.

Scott Jurek: One of the best examples of a plant-based diet working wonders is Scott Jurek. This world-renowned ultramarathoner has been on a plant-based diet for over 20 years and has been winning and breaking records everywhere.

The Williams Sisters: Probably the most well-known athletes on this list, John Denboer mentions the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, as amazing examples of how beneficial plant-based diets can be. After Venus was diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an incurable autoimmune disease in 2011, Serena supported her by changing her diet as well. The following year, the sisters won gold in the Olympic doubles competition.

The benefits of family cooking sessions

Gourmet chef John DenBoer knows all too well the significance of cooking in a person’s life. In fact, he imparts this knowledge on a regular basis during the classes he conducts with his students. Lately, he has had the pleasure of talking to students who are also parents, who have shared some of their experiences with their children at home.

While John believes that family dinners are quite important, he now realizes that family cooking sessions are equally so. For this blog, he shares three benefits families may reap from cooking food together.

Children learn safety in the kitchen.

John DenBoer notes that one of the most important things children will learn when cooking with parents is that while it’s fun, it isn’t a game. There are certain rules to follow to ensure the safety of everyone. John stresses that there are a great many things in the kitchen that may pose a threat to people who are cooking, such as operating stovetops, sharp utensils, and hazardous chemicals.

Children learn math.

For so many children, math can be a boring subject. After all, it’s repetitive and sometimes confusing. However, when cooking, even when carefully measuring the proper proportions of food can be loads of fun. Children can also learn the basics of time management as they monitor the duration that certain food needs to be cooked or cooled.

Children learn an important life skill.

John DenBoer has always emphasized the immense value of cooking as a life skill. It’s something everyone everywhere should learn – and the younger they’re introduced to it, the better. When children learn how to cook and have fun doing it, they keep in their memory and take the knowledge with them as they grow older.

A lot of people enroll in gourmet cooking classes and learn the many ways to prepare gourmet meals.  Many of them take things a step further and incorporate it permanently into their daily routines.  Some aspiring gourmet chefs even go so far as to have their homes renovated to make room for a gourmet kitchen.

And that’s a good thing, according to gourmet chef and world traveler John DenBoer. Having a gourmet kitchen at home enhances the experience of cooking, making it easier and more enjoyable.

However, gourmet kitchens require a number of essential things. 

First off, there’s the large refrigerator with a freezer.  This appliance should be able to hold enough of the stocked ingredients.  Then, there are, of course, the ovens and multi-burner stovetops, both of which should be of the highest quality one can afford.  Gourmet kitchens also need to have a strong ventilation system that recirculates the air.  There are calculations for this.  And finally, one of the most basic features of a gourmet kitchen is the gourmet kitchen island with a prep sink.

John DenBoer mentions that size is important for gourmet kitchens as it should be able to hold everything a gourmet chef needs, from the equipment to the ingredients, to the tools.  But it should also be designed in such a way that when the person is cooking, especially on the stovetops, they can reach of anything he or she needs, or at the very least, take minimal time to acquire them.

John DenBoer notes that it’s also important for people to know what they love cooking and what they’ll be cooking most.  He mentions that people who cook mostly vegetables have different needs from people who cook mostly fish or people who cook mostly meat.
